About Aerides Orchids

Aerides falcata

Discovered in 1790 by a missionary and botanist named João de Loureiro.

Aerides orchids are very similar to vandas, for example, their growth is monopodial, meaning they grow upwards.

They also have many common names, such as:

  • Fox tail
  • Cat’s tail
  • Fox tail

These nicknames are due to their inflorescence, which develops pendulous structures resembling a tail.

Flowering

Aerides odorata

Its flowering occurs between spring and summer for 3 to 5 weeks.

It usually emits a floral stem ranging from a few centimeters to half a meter in height.

Capable of producing up to 50 flowers, each about 3 centimeters (1.18 inches) in size.

These flowers can be various colors, such as:

  • White
  • Yellow
  • Purple
  • Pink

In some species, these flowers have a very pleasant aroma.

How to Care for Them

Aerides lawrenciae

All orchids have some basic needs, and with aerides orchids, it’s no different.

They are orchids whose cultivation I consider moderate.

But if you provide all the care they need, you don’t have to worry too much.

  1. Temperature: they like high temperatures because in their natural habitat, temperatures are higher.
  2. Light: provide high illumination; in some species, they can have direct sunlight from morning until 10 a.m. and also after 5 p.m.
  3. Humidity: it should be high, on average 70% or more, but they also tolerate lower humidity.
  4. Fertilizer: apply weekly, but diluted to 1/4 or 1/2 strength.
  5. Repotting: like vandas, if you grow them in hanging baskets, you probably won’t have to repot them.
  6. Ventilation: the place should be ventilated, but not excessively.

If you provide these conditions for your orchid, you can be sure it will bloom in no time.
